KNOW THE RULES OF THE ROAD

Tips for passing the driving test

Know the Rules of the Road

  • Review the Ontario Driver’s Handbook thoroughly. Be confident with traffic signs, right-of-way rules, and safe driving practices.

Practice in Different Conditions

  • Drive in various weather, traffic, and lighting conditions so you’re prepared for anything on test day.

Stay Calm Under Pressure

  • Nerves are normal—focus on the road, not the examiner. Deep breaths can help you stay relaxed.

Listen Carefully to Instructions

  • If you don’t understand something, politely ask the examiner to repeat it.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

  • Being well-rested helps with focus, reaction time, and decision-making on the big day!

Road safety advice

Keep a Safe Following Distance

  • Maintaining the right amount of space between your vehicle and the one ahead of you is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent collisions
  • Increase this gap in wet, icy, or foggy conditions

Use Indicators Early

Your indicators (turn signals) are your way of “speaking” to other drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. Using them correctly and on time helps everyone on the road anticipate your next move and keeps traffic flowing safely.

Adapt to Weather Conditions

Weather can change driving conditions in an instant, and safe drivers know how to adjust their habits to match what’s happening outside.

  • Slow Down in Rain, Snow, or Fog
  • Use the Right Lights: In rain, snow, or fog, turn on your low-beam headlights (never high beams in fog as they reflect back and reduce visibility)

Stay Calm Under Pressure

Driving can sometimes be stressful, especially for new drivers. Keeping your cool helps you make safer, clearer decisions.

  • Don’t Rush/Speed
  • Breathe and Reset
  • Avoid Road Rage
